The Battle of Norwalk came to life this Saturday at Mill Hill Historic Park. "Norwalk was indeed destroyed and it was the most destroyed town in all of Connecticut, but our research shows that it was actually the largest single battle ever fought on Connecticut soil," said local historian Edward Eckert. The Norwalk Historical Society commemorated the 235th anniversary of the Battle and Burning of Norwalk on Mill Hill Historical Park with a Revolutionary War Encampment setup. On July 11 of 1779 British Major-General William Tryon with over 2,000 troops, attacked and destroyed the town of Norwalk, leaving homes, churches and other town houses demolished. "There are people buried out in Mill Hill here that were in the battle, people at St. Paul's and all over, but especially here, you can just feel their presence." said local historian Madeline Eckert. Residents had the chance to tour three historic buildings, learn from local historians, and watch equipment demonstrations and a Cavalry reenactment by Sheldon's Horse and the Second Continental regiment. "It's the first time that we had a revolutionary war actors here at Mill Hill and we are very, very excited," said Norwalk Historical Society Executive director Diane Jellerette. "Two battles that are mentioned in history are the battle of Ridgefield and the Battle of Groton Heights, in both of those we've been able to determine that there were actually more British and American soldiers here then there were at the other two battles combined," said Eckert.
