How to use NVENC encoding with OBS on Linux - recording smooth videos at 60fps

So, you want to record smooth videos, at 60 frames per second, but OBS is gobbling up half your CPU power ? You need NVENC ! This specific encoding software only works on Nvidia graphics cards, but enables less than 10% CPU usage while recording or streaming, since it uses the GPU instead of the CPU ! Enabling it on Linux is not simple, even though it's not that hard. All we need to do is: 1 - Download the Nvidia SDK: wget https://developer.nvidia.com/video-sdk-601 sudo apt install unzip unzip video-sdk-601 sudo cp nvidia_video_sdk_6.0.1/Samples/common/inc/*.h /usr/local/include/ 2 - Getting ready to compile FFMPEG sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt update sudo apt build-dep ffmpeg sudo apt install libfdk-aac-dev 3 - Compiling ffmpeg apt-get source ffmpeg cd ffmpeg-VERSION NUMBER ffmpeg buildconf This will give us a long line of parameters. You need to copy this, and paste it in a text editor, such as Scratch on elementary OS. We need to add the required paramters at the end of this text to make sure FFMPEG will take NVENC into account. At the end of the line, add these lines: --enable-nonfree --enable-nvenc --enable-libfdk-aac Don't forget to leave a space between the last parameter and the ones we just added ! Copy everything you have in your text file. In your terminal, type: ./configure then paste everything you copied. You should have something that looks like that Now, we build FFMPEG, by typing: make sudo make install Follow me on Twitter : http://twitter.com/thelinuxEXP Follow me on Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/web/accounts/368853 Music courtesy of Kevin MacLeod -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Also Watch my Experience with Manjaro Budgie on a Full AMD Linux Build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZdj4Q08fBg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

NVENC Gets An Upgrade - Nvidia Encoder Talk

New NVENC capabilities and the GTX / RTX 2060 are all but the hottest topic coming from Nvidia right now and for good reason. When the RTX cards first launch many in the PC gaming tech community including myself took to finding out the hard way what if any were the upgrades in hardware accelerated encoding for the new series of GPUs. Well it what seemed to have happened was no realized performance gains over my GTX 1080 in the NVENC department. The 1080 comes with 2 NVENC chips and at the time we didn'ty have access to an updated NVENC GPU Support Martix from Nvidia so all we had to go on was our tests. While GPU's lower than the 1080 wouldn't be able to kepp up with it any way, I saw no real gains from my 2080ti. We now have an updated gpu support matrix from nvidia and it tells us that pretty much all of the RTX (2070, 2080, 2080ti) cards have a single NVENC chip but have the same capabilities as one of the GPUs with 2 of the older chips. With that said we don't have official word on the encoder that's coming with the 2060 but I doubt they will break from convention with this one. Try to make sense of that is a little easier if you go over to the Nvidia developer blogs and look up Turing architecture in depth you'll see that the new chips gain 15% performance in h.264 encoding over pascal and 25% on h.265. They are claiming higher quality in the marketing materials but don't let that fool you, the higher quality is a result of the increased efficiency of the chips. Old NVENC vs New NVENC - Quality Comparisons, Settings, What You Need to Know! (FULL GUIDE)

This is (hopefully) the last video I make on the subject for a while, but I'm still getting questions about how the "New NVENC" introduced in OBS v23 differs from the old way of doing NVENC, how it compares to x264, and how any of this relates to the quality increase on RTX cards. Let's discuss. 🎤 SPONSOR: ModMic Wireless - https://antlionaudio.com/?utm_source=EposVox&utm_medium=YouTube&utm_campaign=Wireless 🎤 Quality comparisons start around 15:34 for those less patient! Nvidia's RTX NvEnc is beyond impressive... (GPU encoding explanation, x264 Medium Comparison)

I've used Nvidia's "NvEnc" GPU video encoder for my content creation on a daily basis for quite a few years now. But when it comes to low-bitrate live streaming, there's always been a trade-off of lower quality for higher performance compared to X264 CPU encoding. That is... UNTIL NOW! I put Nvidia's new RTX/Turing architecture's NvEnc improvements to the test vs x264. 🎤 SPONSOR: ModMic Wireless - https://antlionaudio.com/?utm_source=EposVox&utm_medium=YouTube&utm_campaign=Wireless 🎤 💻 Sample Clip Downloads: https://drive.google.com/open?id=17W1qoTl-IgNj8HVbOaG3NQp-GHyKwlhj (NOTE: The Halo clips are mostly 30FPS due to an issue on my OBS config.
